Family Portrait Day - Smiles on the Set Please

Today we went to JC Penney for portraits. We got a family portrait and a portrait of the girls. My husbands stepmother requested a family portrait almost a year ago and we still hadn't gotten one done. We tried. We tried the do it yourself at a local park but the pictures came out horrible and I could not send those off. That was nearly six months ago. So I decided it was time.

We started with the family portrait and unfortatunately our two year old does not take well to new surroundings. Fortunately no tears were shed but she did not look very happy in any of the pictures so we had to take the best of the worst. Then it was the girls turn. I tried my best to make her laugh with stuffed animals and goofy sounds but it didn't cut it. I tried the classic "say cheese" which works at home every time, but not in the studio. This girl was not going to smile. Then I spotted it. A duster!

A duster is brilliant and works like a charm. It's long handle allows you to reach over and give them a tickle and pull it away without being in the way of the shot. I poked her with it and said I'm gonna getcha! And laugh she did. The first time I poked her in the belly then raised it up and away. As a result both girls looked up. The next time I started from her leg and worked up to her belly then brought it straight back behind the photographer, and it worked. They looked right at the camera iwth big smiles. The last couple shots with this master technique actually worked magnificently. It ended up with the last shot being the best. She had a great big smile looking right at the camera. My other daughter is very photogenic and a ham so she's never a problem. So finally we had our money shot! You can too with this simple technique.
